This song was selected as part of the demotape clinic of M4Music in 2007 for the pop category, and as such was played in front of a public audience during the festival. After it was played, a Nine Inch Nail kind of guy came to me and told me it’s certainly fun to sing about spending one’s summer in a swimsuit, but that really I should pick more important matters to sing about. The guy missed it. Sure, this song comes across as shallow, but it’s about enjoying the good times while they last, because one day it’ll be over for good, that’s one thing we all know. You can’t get more philosophical than that, can you?
Sound-wise, I inspired myself a lot from the one hit wonder the Radicals with their song ‘You only get what you give’, and its killer chorus. I also added some reverse guitar bits that were a nightmare to record (try to play reverse and you'll see why).

Let’s face it, I am not a natural born singer, so I like to put my lead vocals quite low in the mix and double them to hide the imperfections. ‘L’oreille au sol’ is a case where the lead vocal is just part of the music, as opposed to the way most of the French songs are recorded, where the voice is put way in the front and the lyrics are the driver. Here, it was all about getting the right atmospheric sound and a Peter Hook kind of bass line, and then laying a John Squire/Stone Roses-influenced guitar part on it (and that was a lot of fun).

This is so far my biggest attempt at writing something that really sounds like a traditional french song. The lyrics here are pretty autobiographic, however, in the past years, I haven't been as indecisive as the lyrics imply. I had a lot of fun recording the finish of that one and making it as beatlesesque as possible, including the handclaps and the bazoo.

This song is an attempt at recreating a cinemascope sound from the Ennio Morricone soundtracks mixed with the kind of production made by this one artist I admire a lot called Sparklehorse. The final result does not have as much edge as I would have liked to, partly due to my limited technical skills, but it’s a fine slow 3 step number with a final that almost turns into a waltz. Check it!

Kind of a cheesy number with its Copacabana sounds, but one of my favourites, thanks to its 2nd degree feel. I wanted to have a go at playing a song with a bossa nova groove, a copycat of what Beck did with his ‘Tropicalia’ song, and now I know it’s not an easy task. The lyrics are all about how to grow old and accepting it in a harmonious way and being in phase with oneself, something I am still learning (but aren’t we all?).

Rancho mirage is the name of a resort in the Californian desert where my grandmother is living. There isn’t much special about it, but I just love the name of the place. It’s so romantic, I had to use it in a song, and it became this sort of story about a quest in the desert.
Then again, in terms of sound, I wanted to record something with arrangements inspired by the amazing band Calexico or the song ‘Bang Bang’ by Lee Hazelwood and Nancy Sinatra, but the end result sounds kind of Slavic. How the hell did that happen?

Here is my go at writing a song inspired by the work of Coldplay during their ‘Parachutes’ period (their only truly good period, I think), kind of dark, emotional and atmospheric. I believe this song contains the best part I’ve recorded so far, the second verse, located between 1:53 and 2:25; I don’t know how it happened, I just added up all the instrument parts without much thinking, but eventually the sounds are all balanced the way they should be, and every time I listen to it I am really pleased with the final result. It’s a great feeling!

Although this song is extremely slow and might sound sad, it is actually one of the happiest ones I wrote! I had the idea about it when flying from Lugano to Geneva over the Alps one evening. The mountains were so beautiful in the warm sunset light! I was mesmerized, I had to say or sing something about it. This is one of my favourite songs.

I was told this song sounds like Lenny Kravitz's 'Stand by my woman'... That's a nice thing to say, given it probably cost a thousand times less to record. On this one, I do my best to include a guitar part inspired by those of Lou Reed on the quiet songs of the Velvet, like ‘Pale Blue Eyes’.
