This is a common experience that people might have with Beth Preston.
Born in southern California to two music professionals, Beth Preston was raised in vibrationally rich territory that inspired much creativity and learning. Between the ocean, and discovering the musics and poetries of Jeff Buckly and Ani Difranco in her late teens, Beth had nothing to do but be inspired.
An album and a few tours under her belt, the horizon is now fast approaching for lift-off on a new creative project that will be released this summer called "White Butterfly, Black Crow", and a few tours are in the works.
Her mission: to inspire, and bring all who connect with her through music, back to the depth of who they really are.

After tentative pre-teenage forays into cassette recorders and joke rap bands with friends, Kel devoted most of his teenage years to bone splintering skateboarding mishaps before deciding that loops and samples might provide him with a safer past time than trucks and wheels.

Despite adolescent attempts at computer music resulting in "crap rave efforts" made on a commodore Amiga, the process of sampling and sequencing provided him with a discipline and focus that is of fundamental importance to the creative process that he currently employs in the execution of his gob-smackingly impressive "head-nod-tronica" work-outs.

Coming to the attention of DC Recordings in early 2003, his first release for label was the 12" EP 'The People are Trying to Sleep', a wide eyed carnival of fractured beats and warped electronics. "God, aliens, dreads and Kyng Arthur"

The last time I hung out with reggae singer Kyng Arthur, he was sporting the most impressive crown of dreadlocks I'd ever seen, an elaborate network of oily coils he sometimes arranged into a turban, a work of art years in the making.
But on his latest CD, Prisoner of the Flesh, Arthur's regal mane has been clear-cut. The suddenly shorn Kyng is wearing a black bowler hat and starched white shirt that make him look like a droog from A Clockwork Orange.
Arthur patiently explained to me that God had told him to cut his hair.
"Sometimes I was having fulminations and recurring dreams that I would be in a barber shop," he said in a Trinidadian patois thicker than Bill O'Reilly's forehead. "It keep happening all the time, consistently. When I didn't [cut my hair], something was always going wrong. I would have problems with headaches and stuff like that. Sometimes we have to go with the vision that God gives us. He always have a message for everything. Sometimes a tree has to be cut down for it to come back stronger and renew again. Sometimes you have to shake off the burdens you've been carrying for a long time."
Kyng Arthur, you see, is one heavy dude, and I'd expect nothing less than an act of God behind any major decisions he makes in life. On Prisoner, a CD which is some kinda masterpiece, Kyng Arthur sings of demons and burning flames, of lost souls and alien beings, of 10,000 warriors coming down from the sky to open up a serious can of whoop-ass, most likely on spiritually retarded heathens such as myself.
Kyng Arthur's debut CD, 1999's Mister Master, was wonderful but flawed. His singing and songwriting were in top form, but the background music was mostly samples and snyths as opposed to live musicians. On Prisoner, that omission has been corrected. Bassist Fully Fullwood; guitarist Dale Hauskins; keyboardist Jawge Hughes; drummer Rock Deadrick; and backup singers April Weller, Aiysha Sinclair and Elizabeth Hangan weave a hypnotic spell of pulsating, deep-groove roots and dancehall reggae that showcases the Kyng holding court to marvelous effect.
"The last one we did was mechanical, but this time, we used live musicians," quoth the Kyng, born Arthur Oracio Sinclair 40-some years ago in Trinidad. "When you do that, it makes it fatter and gives it more of that spiritual vibe. Most of the musicians, we've been playing together for a long time, almost 15 years."
Kyng's live presence is as compelling as the new CD. A gnomish fella, Arthur bounds around the stage, more energetic than most of his reggae brethren, for many of whom a stoned-out skank passes as showmanship. It's as if Arthur's supernatural obsessions take possession of his earthly form and force his body to speak in tongues. And it is those bizarre obsessions that set him apart: rather than using the same old Jah/ganja/one-love imagery, Arthur is fascinated by forces the human eye can't see.
"It's the reality of things and the way we survive in this world," he says. "There are always elements trying to pull you down and fight against everything that is positive, especially gifts that God gives you. There are a lot of obstacles. Every time you climb, someone tries to pull you back. There are forces from above, from other planets. Ever since we've been here, we've heard about alien beings. I was looking into Hebrews, chapter 1, verse 2. You have worlds here and worlds afar. I believe that God is a very massive God, and he didn't create just us; he created everything—other forces and alien beings that look after us, forces that are superhuman, supernatural to man. There is guidance in the world."

Among the guiding forces in Sinclair's music is South OC resident George "Fully" Fullwood, who produced Prisoner of the Flesh and handled the bass chores. Fullwood can lay claim to being an actual architect of reggae music; he founded and led Peter Tosh's band Soul Syndicate, and he backed almost every other major Caribbean reggae star, including Bob Marley, Dennis Brown, Gregory Isaacs and OC's other authentic reggae mensch, Rascalin. Fullwood spends much of his time on the road and is a very busy man indeed, but his belief in Kyng Arthur's gifts made him decide to find the time to oversee the Kyng's latest proclamation.
"I've known Kyng Arthur for a long time and seen him playing at different clubs," says Fullwood. "I think he's a very good songwriter; he has a very good talent. This song, 'Prisoner of the Flesh,' I like it very much. The lyrics for that and many other of his songs is something that is very touching, you know. And he is a very humble person, a unique person and performer, which is a very important thing in the music. You don't want to sound like somebody else. What he does is different; he has his own unique voice and style. And I also think he's a very nice person."

Nice, but dead-serious, a guy from whom it's hard to elicit laughter, a man who seems so genuinely seized by what he refers to in conversation and song as "dreams and visions" that he functions on a different plane. While he's deeply spiritual, Arthur's unnamed religion is benevolent and inclusive rather than rigid and dogmatic. He's no Bin Laden, no Falwell.
"Being now in the western world, I have experienced that there is one God we all serve through different forms," Arthur says. "Some serve him through Christianity, some through Judaism, Islam or Hindu. You check all these things out, and it will come naturally to you where you stand. Whether you are a disciple of Christ, of Mohammed, of Krishna or Selassie I, it is an identity that you're looking for. After a while, you come to realize there is no limit to God in definition or in color. God is God, and God is everywhere, in everyone."

The EP (half length album) is a six-song-expression from Jah Mex’s mind, heart, and soul. Jah Mex’s music comes from 10 years of hard work. At 18-years-old Jah Mex bought his first keyboard and was determined to learn how to play by ear, just like his Grandfather. With no previous musical training, Jah Mex locked him self in his bedroom spending an average of 8 hours a day, 7 days a week, learning his new love. Listening to favorite LP’s like Soon Forward from Gregory Issacs, Jah Mex was able to distinguish certain keyboard sounds, and started to imitate what he heard.

A close friend nick named “Ali Baba” introduced Jah Mex to local music prodigy Mike Ball. Ball would then teach Jah Mex basic chord progressions and scales. Jah Mex then applied this new knowledge to his daily bedroom practice.

Friends would come and listen to Jah Mex as his skills quickly progressed. Two months before turning 19-years-old,Jah Mex tried out for his first reggae band, Fresh Roots.
Jamaican drummer and lead singer, Albert Nolan, spent his time and talents teaching Jah Mex about reggae music, and Jamaican culture. Through Fresh Roots,Jah Mex also met bass player Mike Ortiz(aka Mikey B),and Los Angeles guitarist,Dale Hauskins,who are both in his band today.

Strong passions for live performances lead Jah Mex to his second group, Four 20 Band. Jah Mex would travel up and down the west coast with Four 20 working hard. After opening up a show for well known reggae artist, Eek A Mouse, Four 20 was invited to be the backing band for Eek-A-Mouse.

Jah Mex was working full time as a valet parking lot manager, and could not get away from work. Not too long after, Jah Mex sought out one of the best reggae singers in Los Angeles, Kitaka, and asked to play keyboards for him. Kitaka saw a talent, but he also saw week spots. Taking Jah Mex under his wing, Kitaka drove to his house for the next two months and trained him on the keyboards.

This opened up a whole new world for Jah Mex, and led to playing gigs at L.A’s hot spots such as the Lighthouse, and Club 49.

In 2003 Jah Mex received another call from Four 20 Band to go on tour with Eek-A-Mouse. This time it was to Europe. Needless to say, Jah Mex took the offer. Twenty eight days on the road in foreign land, a major crisis in the Middle East with America and Iraq, and 18 shows booked was a valuable learning experience both musically and personally for Jah Mex.

After Europe, Jah mex would play keyboards for Eek-A-Mouse through 2004. Performing his best on every show with Eek-A-Mouse had earned him a reputable name among other musicians.

Well known reggae drummer,Zebby,of Detour Posse,took Jah Mex under his wing, and got him jobs playing keyboards for artists such as Junior Reed, Mighty Diamonds, and the Melodians. While playing a gig for Mighty Diamonds and the Melodians,Jah Mex became friends with Shaka Man and Lesterfari,two band members from Los Angeles reggae group, Boomshaka. Upon playing a series of shows with Boomshaka,Jah Mex’s musician skills were forced to increase to a higher level. This opportunity also led Jah Mex to playing with reggae singer from Jamaica, Abijah.

Jah Mex was born to Dan & Mariann Arredondo in Whittier, California, on September 21st, 1978. At 7-years-old, Jah Mex moved with his family to Orange County. It was a major change of environment for young Jah Mex as he was one of the two Mexican/American students at his new school. An identity crisis started right away for Jah Mex as teachers and students would ask if he spoke English. His reply was: “I only know how to speak English”. Always taught to be proud of his heritage, Jah Mex soon ran into another issue: Mexican children his age that would poke fun because he did not speak Spanish, nor did not “act Mexican”.

As Jah Mex lived near many surf breaks in Southern Orange County, he eventually took him self out of traditional sports, and spent countless days learning to Bodyboard at Salt Creek Beach in Dana Point,California.

Jah Mex found his first group of friends in the water, and gained respect through his growing ability to ride waves. The surf culture gave many positive things to Jah Mex. One of the greatest was reggae music. While working as a gas station attendant at 16-years-old, Jah Mex would meet Laguna Beach native, Dan Stafford, who introduced him to classic reggae artists like Hugh Mundel, Gregory Issacs, Burning Spear, and many more.

In 2004 Jah Mex decided to take a break from playing keyboards, and took a full time position in the Real Estate industry. He applied the same passion, production, and perseverance to his new trade, and found him self successful in a short amount of time. For almost four years, Jah Mex was away from his musical life style.

Ever since the beginning of his music career he had written music, and words, but was always too busy playing with other artists. This passion began to boil. His outlet for this burning desire was prefaced by launching an internet radio website, Shockout.com in March of 2006.

Jah Mex saw this as a way to be close to reggae music, and reggae listeners around the world while he was stuck inside the office. With a strong team behind Shockout.com including Zonk One, Selecta 7, Symplistik, Todd Gibson, and D.J Pauze, the website has become highly ranked with internet search engines like Google, and Yahoo.

The boiling passion came again after spending time with some friends Hawaii during new years 2007. Jah Mex was burnt out on working in a profession that was not his passion. He carefully planned out a new music journey, gathered his writings, and got out of the business six months later in June. Three months later he released Mind Food.

In Whittier California on September 21rst, 1978, Jah Mex was born to Dan & Marian Arredondo. Before Jah Mex time, Dan & Marian were both raised in East Los Angeles during the 50s & 60s when the word Chicano was commonly used to describe Mexican Americans.

As a son of two Chicano parents, Jah Mex was exposed to many spices and flavors of Mexican culture accept one, the language. Mex, along with his older brother Aaron, and all their cousins were only exposed to Spanish when causing mischief around the house. The aunts and uncles would speak of disciplinary action, and the children would run outside to avoid further trouble.

In the late 80s, Jah Mex parents moved the family to Orange County where the Chicano count at that time was slim to none. Third grade at Valencia Elementary School was a change of worlds for little Mex as classmates and teachers would ask if he spoke English.

A search for Jah Mex identity came early. He eventually excluded typical after school sports like baseball, made new friends at Salt Creek beach in Dana Point, and chose body boarding as his beloved sport.

Being exposed to Dana Point surf culture lead Jah Mex to Bob Marley music. At 16, he decided to invest some of his income from a gas station job into acquiring all of Marley& albums. Working at the gas station he met Dan Stafford, a local Laguna kid the same age as Mex, who made him aware of other reggae artists like Israel Vibration, Burning Spear, and Third World.

At 18, Jah Mex decided to buy a Casio keyboard, and learn to be reggae musician. He watched his Grandpa perform gospel music on the piano by ear while listening to tapes. So he knew it could be done.

With no previous music training,Jah Mex picked up cord progressions from albums like Soon Forward by Gregory Isaacs, and King Tubby Meets Rockers Uptown featuring Augustus Pablo. At 19,Jah Mex met bassist Mike Ortiz aka Mikey B while going to Saddle Back College,and Ortiz asked him to try out for his band,Fresh Roots.
Jah Mex tried out,Fresh Roots, including lead singer Albert Nolan,from Port Antonio Jamaica, took him in.

Feeling gifted with meaning and purpose, Jah Mex devoted every day possible to learning his craft on the keyboards. This led to a full time job with the Four 20 Band, a reggae/rock group from Orange County. At 23-years old, Jah Mex along with Four 20, were hired by well-known reggae artist, Eek A Mouse, to be his backing band for a tour to Europe in 2003.

After the Europe tour with Eek A Mouse, Jah Mex recieved calls to play keyboards for other artists including Tippa Irie, Junior Reed, Mighty Diamonds, Melodians, and Boom Shaka. He also worked with many Los Angeles reggae artists like Kitaka, Dakeye, Detour Posse, Smoothie Jones, and Crucial, and has produced an arsenal of his own reggae riddims.

Jah Mex went a different direction in 2003, told everyone he was taking a break from keyboards, and entered a full time job in the mortgage industry. While learning the trade, he closely followed new reggae music and artists from Jamaica. As the latest reggae was only available to him on the internet through low quality downloads, Jah Mex decided to buy turntables, and order the 7 inch records direct from Jamaica.

Using the same equipment for his riddim productions, he started to make mix CD for all his friends. Jah Mex was first driven to open his own record store in South Orange County, but realized the demand was still not enough for a contemporary reggae supply.

As the presence of I Pods, downloads, and internet radio became stronger towards 2006, Jah Mex began to sketch ideas for his own website that could help fashion a knowledge, and demand for new reggae artists.

Tippa Irie has produced fifteen albums to date and has a string of ..1 hit
songs to his credit including "Hello Darling", "Raggamuffin Girl" (featuring
Peter Hunnigale), "Stress" (featuring Lloyd Brown), "Superwoman"
(featuring Winsome), "Baby I've Been Missing You" (featuring Janet Lee
Davis) and "Shouting for the Gunners"--a song originally recorded for the
Arsenal Football Team which reached the Top 30 status on the British pop
charts. Tippa's first album-'Is It Really Happening To Me' (1986), was
followed by 'Two Sides of Tippa Irie' (1987). Soon thereafter 'JA To UK
Clash' (1988) with Papa San was released for Fashion Records. Then
came 'Original Raggamuffin' (1989) and 'New Decade' (1990), both for
Island Records. Tippa then linked up with Rebel MC and his label, Tribal
Bass, for the release of 'Done, Cook, and Curry'(1991) with Peter
Hunnigale. 'A Me Dis'(1992, I.R.S.) was Tippa's long-awaited U.S. debut
recording. His second U.S. release was 'Sapphire and Steel' (1993, I.R.S.)
with Peter Spence. England's Mad Professor then produced 'Rebel on the
Roots Corner' (1994) for RAS Records. Tippa's Best of compilation for
Jammin Records was appropriately entitled 'Mr.Versatile'(1998) and
featured five of Tippa's ..1 hits.

'Divide & Rule'(2000) with Musical Sniper AKA Rappa Robert was
produced for Music Avenue in Belgium. Resin Music released both 'I
Miss'(2001) and 'Sign of the Times'(2003) in North America.
'Combinations'(2004) with Lloyd Brown was released in the UK on
Discoflex Records. Tippa's latest offering is entitled 'Greatest Hits'(2005)
on Sanctuary Records and it features six of his ..1 hit songs as well as
many of his classic signature tunes.

To this day, Tippa Irie remains one of the most requested Reggae
entertainers internationally. The surviving members of Sublime made
sure their Long Beach Dub All Stars debut for Dreamworks Records had
the necessary dancehall credentials by commissioning Tippa Irie to
contribute "Sensi" on their 'Right Back'(1999) CD and be their special
guest on their subsequent North American tour. In 2000 he was invited to
support UB40 on their sold-out Labour of Love III UK tour. Later Tippa
was called back in >the studio with Long Beach Dub All Stars to
record "Life Goes On" featuring Half Pint and Jurassic Five's Charli2na on
LBDA's 'Wonders of the World'(2001) CD for Dreamworks Records.
Impressed with Tippa's rapid-fire lyrical arsensal, Jurassic Five asked
Tippa to record together and the end result was a wicked Tippa and
Charli2na combination entitled "The Struggle". The rap world took notice
and soon enough Tippa was once again summoned to record with some of
the music industry's biggest stars. Most recently Tippa was nominated for
a Grammy in the Best Rap Song category for his collaboration with Black
Eyed Pea's Will-I-Am on "Hey Mama", a track featured on the
international chartbusting 'Elephunk'(2004) CD on A&M/Interscope Records.

Consisting of legendary Jamaican musicians Soul Syndicate's Santa Davis,Fully Fullwood,Tony Chin,along with St.Thomas keyboardist Jawge Hughes,percussionist extraordinaire Steve Reed (The Rippingtons),Los Angeles guitarist Dale Hauskins and April Weller on vocals,with Hawaii's singer-artist Humble Soul;and horns from the Mongoose band.

Providing the riddims and a variety of "9/11" and "America's war on terrorism" references providing the song titles. The album opens with "The Anti-Christ", a nice dubbed up reworking of the Soul Vendors' Studio One classic "Swing Easy". The rest of this album brings the listener some entertaining, well dubbed tunes (some of them with vocal snippets of Humble Soul and April Weller here and there for good measure), which provide a glimpse of Scientist's effects-riddled style and mixing wizardry he's known and respected for.

Tuff tune "Babylon Burning",features guitarist Dale Hauskins doing a heavy lead rock guitar sound and solos.

Jamaica's Hopeton Brown, the mixing engineer who became known as Scientist, burst onto the reggae scene in the mid 70's with a reckless mixing style that seemed to outdo even legend King Tubby's wildest extravaganzas. He began his career as an engineer at King Tubby's Jamaican recording studio in 1978. Shortly afterwards he became a protege of King Tubby, and swiftly gained a reputation with his unique and innovative mixing style. Scientist soon became Jamaica's top recording engineer and worked with everyone imaginable, including Dennis Brown, Barrington Levy, Freddie McGregor, Dean Fraser, Linval Thompson, Augustus Pablo, The Heptones and many more. This led to a surge of albums mixed by Scientist from various sources throughout the 80's with "Scientist Meets The Space Invaders" being the most noteworthy.

Even though "Dub 911" is one of Scientist's strongest releases.It will surely find its way to fans of Jamaican dub music.

The name is Obre4 (Struggling Man). And Reggae is the Vibe!

Obre4 was born at Mampong, Akwapim but grew up in Kumasi, Ashanti,Ghana.

His mother is Akwapim and the father, Ewe. At a young age, Obre4 set out following the crowd to Nigeria in search of greener pastures during his country's worst times.

He had the greatest opportunity of exposure to a lot of music while he was there.

Listening to the Reggae Greats like Max Romeo, Justin Hinds, The Pioneers, Abyssinians, Culture, Burning Spear, Bob N' Peter among many Others, had a great impact on him and I believe that was when the Musical Seed was planted deep within. Disc jockeying when he returned to Ghana after the Mass Deportation, and watching the music grove and move the crowd nurtured that seed. He was in Abidjan, Cote D'Ivoire when Alpha Blondy came to the scene.
He had a bigger impact on him because he was local, and that was when Obre4 started to write his songs. When he finally got a break and got to the U.S. of A., at last! He said. The desire has always been music but instead, he joined the U.S. Navy and soon after, Saddam Hussein flexed his muscles on Kuwait and he found himself in the Gulf (Desert Shield/Storm), and soon after that, Somalia (Operation Restore Hope).

After 4 years of active duty, Obre4 was discharged (honorably) only to join the merchant marine (seaman).

He sailed on oil tankers for a few years and loved it but his music was suffering and kept calling him so he heeded to the call and enrolled in school (Conservatory Of Recording Arts/Sciences, Mesa, Arizona), where he studied Audio Engineering and Music Production.

This way, he can write and record his songs the way he feel them.

Obre4's life journeys has taken him to places and he's come across different people on different continents and in his observations, he noticed that the only language that brings us all together is MUSIC.

This has inspired him to practice this language and into his life's experiences, he have tapped to write these songs. This way,the feelings are TRUE.

This is the force behind his first project : CONSCIOUSness!

This album is nicely cooked with the help of the talented and crafty Misgana Mulat who did some wonderful job throwing down the drum tracks, keyboards, and the tight basslines while Los Angeles Californian guitarist Dale Hauskins of African reggae mega-star Majek Fashek,and England's Tippa Irie fame sweetened them up with some wicked guitar licks and everything mixed-blended together by the legendary Jamaican bassist Fully Fullwood of Bob Marley/Peter Tosh and Soul Syndicate fame(Jamaica's #1 recording/Backing band),giving it that authentic roots reggae feel yet maintaining the African groove.

These songs are all coming from deep within to bring Hope, Love, and A Word Of Thought to Humankind.

Switzerland’s best symphonic progressive rock band of any consequence, Flame Dream released its third album, Out In The Dark, in 1981. Recorded at Patrick Moraz’s legendary "Aquarius" studio in Geneva and surpassing 1979’s excellent Elements, it is a classic of European progressive rock. Amazingly, in continental Europe, brilliant, classic progressive rock music was still being produced with little regard for the prevailing winds of disco, new wave and punk. Flame Dream had hit it big in Europe with release of Elements, and were mounting huge, headlining tours of the continent every year for months at a time, hitting the road in five semi trucks and a crew of eighteen. The band had even commandeered the Eden Hotel in Weggis, just across the Statter See from Lucerne, and set up for rehearsals in the historic building. Before hitting the road to promote Elements, the band decided to add a guitarist to their line up, and, on the advice of Brand X keyboardist Robin Lumley, Flame Dream picked up young Los Angeles guitarist Dale Hauskins. After finishing high school in California, Dale decided to jump into the deep end of the pool and set off for London and its burgeoning prog/fusion scene. He haunted jam sessions at Rod Argent’s keyboard shop for two years and had struck up friendships with Lumley, Peter Gabriel and Allan Holdsworth, among others. He had obviously paid attention to Holdsworth, as Hauskins also displays the same fluid, legato style as his mentor, with phrasing that owes a strong debt to Coltrane.

The music on Out In The Dark continues in the same vein as on their preceding albums, with rich, keyboard heavy compositions by vocalist/wind instrument player Peter Wolf (son of the noted Swiss classical pianist and brother of classical/avant-garde composer and pianist John Wolf-Brennan) and keyboardist Roland Rockstuhl. The album is divided into the first, the "Sun Side," and the second, the "Dark Side," and, although lyrically the "Sun Side" does deal with warmer, more upbeat sentiments, the music that accompanies the lighter side of the album is, with the exception of the opening tune, "Full Moon," overall the darker of the two sides. Side two, the "Dark Side" overflows with up tempo meter and bright themes.

The music begins with "Full Moon," a cross between UK and Supertramp, and the most poppy sounding track the band will give us this time. It is followed by one of my favorite cuts, "Nocturnal Flight," five and a half minutes of absolute symphonic joy. The tune favors the late 70's style of Genesis, with keyboard work reminiscent of Tony Banks, and features a wonderful guitar solo by Hauskins. Side one ends with the brilliant title track, "Out In The Dark." Beginning with a melancholy theme, we segue into a lovely melody on Peter Wolf’s flute that sounds much like the intro to Hackett’s guitar solo in "Firth Of Fifth." This turns onto some of the most nimble piano lines ever recorded and the piece develops an almost Italian flair before returning to it’s opening motif.

Side two begins with "Wintertime Nights," which boasts some more great Tony Banks-like keyboard work. "Strange Meeting (Part One)" is another Genesis influenced tune, moving moodily across its stark landscape and exploding into brisk lines from Ruckstuhl’s synthesizer. It is chased by "Caleidoscope," a herky-jerky instrumental that bursts with syncopated keyboard and sax lines, and at times comes across as Gentle Giant-lite. The album's final track, "Strange Meeting (Part Two)," is not a separate track at all, but a continuation of "Caleidoscope" with the imposition of the two main themes from "Strange Meeting (Part One)."

This is a great album, with high caliber musicianship constantly grabbing your attention, very well conceived and developed themes and wonderful production by John Acock, who handled most of Steve Hackett’s solo albums. The similarities to Genesis are, with the exception of a couple of synth solos, entirely compositional, and no one is trying to emulate the "sound" of Genesis, as many other bands have certainly done. Coming late to the game as they did, Flame Dream were, perhaps, not the most innovative band that ever was, but they carried on with true symphonic progressive rock long after many of the genres innovators had turned to pure pop sounds.

African reggae star Majek Fashek has been called a prophet and a poet, and has become one of Africa's greatest singers and musicians with his powerful world beat sound.

In 1987, he embarked on his solo career and soon became Nigeria's biggest reggae star. After winning six awards at the annual PMAN ceremony, he was signed to CBS Nigeria, but soon transferred to Island Records subsidiary Mango, a label more accustomed to marketing reggae internationally.

His debut solo album Prisoner Of Conscience, released in 1988, sold more than 200,000 copies in Nigeria alone. It was followed by "Spirit of Love" a year later, produced by the inestimable Little Steven. The Best of Majek Fashek was released in the UK in 1994, incorporating much of Majek's classic African material, and in 1997 Rainmaker was released on Tuff Gong International.

His newist album "Little Patience" on the Coral Music label www.coralmusicgroup.com is in many ways Fashek's masterwork - the culmination of his lifes extraordinary journey. With powerful and provocative songs like the soulful Power of a Woman, or the inspiring Someday One Day, it is a remarkable collection that incorporates Majeks core influences of Bob Marley, Fela Anikulapo Kuti and Jimi Hendrix. He seamlessly meshes roots, rock, reggae and Afrobeat into a unique signature sound called "kpangolo". Majek describes it as the sound of many cultures coming together.

Fashek had a close relationship with the legendary late Nigerian musician and bandleader Fela Kuti, and he includes a Fela composition "Water No Get Enemy" on the new album. Hes like my big brother, Majek has said and like Fela, he not only delivers hard-hitting rhythms, but also a forceful criticism of social and political issues. On "Little Patience", Majek's acid tongue and sharp wit offer insightful and powerful lyrics over fresh Afro-reggae grooves. He combines so many types of music because as he says, "when the styles blend together, music can free the world."

Majek Fashek has always sung from the soul about the political and social struggles he has faced in his long and winding road from Nigeria to the U.S. He first attracted international attention in 1987 when his song, "Send Down The Rain" seemed to coax a rain storm that ended one of the worst droughts in Nigeria' s history. Performing at an outdoor theater, he saw the thirsty crowd yearning for just a few drops of water. No one could imagine the possibility of a downpour, but as Majek sang the lyric "the sky looks misty and cloudy; it looks like the rain's gonna fall today," clouds gathered in the sky, thunder cracked and rain soaked the barren ground.

Since that momentous occasion, Fashek has become one of Africa's most revered contemporary musical performers, rivaling compatriots Alpha Blondy and Lucky Dube in recognition and popularity around the world.

Majek was born Majekodunmi Fasheke in Benin City, once the center of the ancient Sini kingdom. He inherited his love of music from his mother, an Edo woman who raised him following the death of his father when he was eleven years old. A businesswoman, who supplied concrete to road contractors, she inspired him through her participation in traditional religious ceremonies where the Olokun rhythms were used to accompany worship of the river goddess. As a youngster, Fashek played maracas during the ceremonies.

Whether playing maracas and congas as a child at these religious events or singing and playing guitar as a reggae superstar, Majek has always been "on a mission" to deliver God's message through his music.

While he developed an early interest in Jamaican riddims, Fashek was equally drawn to the music of Indian cinema. Learning to play guitar while in secondary school, Fashek joined a band called Jah Stix and, after graduating from the New Era College's Arts Program, he began playing in Lagos nightclubs, universities and even prisons. Majek also worked as an A&R man, helping local musicians like the Mandators and Ras Kimono.

When there is too much hustle in life, Majek observes, youve got to be patient and wait for your time. Youve got to pray and youve got to keep working. Dont be lazy, but watch where youre going thats a little patience.

DOUG Bautista aka Humble Soul does it all right with his second album of true roots reggae originals. With The Scientist as producer/engineer and Peter Tosh Band/Soul Syndicate veterans as his core musicians,including St.Thomas's Jawge Hughes on keyboards,Los Angeles guitarist Dale Hauskins,Bautista maintains a pure reggae groove whether giving thanks and praises to Jah or denouncing the frauds and posers who misrepresent Rastafari for commercial gain.

Douglas Arsinio Bautista is "Humble Soul" was born and raised in Hawaii, and is an ethnic mixture of Japanese and Filipino. After doing some acting and modelling in Hawaii, he relocated to Santa Monica, California. In California he wrote all the lyrics for and self-produced his first CD entitled "Good Lord, Thank You". "Good Lord, Thand You" has become a classic in the Hawaiian islands.

"Army Of Parasites" calls on freedom fighters worldwide to resist oppression with faith in Jah rather than violence. Other songs cover spiritual faith and handling stress in daily life. The music and Bautista's unaffected delivery ties all together.

"I wanted to see if I could do it there. I figured I'd give it a shot and when I got up there it wasn't as difficult as I thought. All you have to do is be true in your music no matter where you go.
"So I did the album up there, but when my son was born I wanted him to grow up here.
"Some people (in the music business) have told me I shouldn't mention my family but that's not me."

Since returning to Hawaii, Bautista has generally maintained a low profile by avoiding club work while sharing reggae concert stages with Don Carlos, Eek-A-Mouse, Damian and Julian Marley, and Shinehead. This album brings the listener some entertaining, well dubbed tunes (some of them with vocal snippets of Humble Soul and April Weller here and there for good measure), which provide a glimpse of Scientist's effects-riddled style and mixing wizardry he's known and respected for.

Jamaica's Hopeton Brown, the mixing engineer who became known as Scientist, burst onto the reggae scene in the mid 70's with a reckless mixing style that seemed to outdo even legend King Tubby's wildest extravaganzas. He began his career as an engineer at King Tubby's Jamaican recording studio in 1978. Shortly afterwards he became a protege of King Tubby, and swiftly gained a reputation with his unique and innovative mixing style. Scientist soon became Jamaica's top recording engineer and worked with everyone imaginable, including Dennis Brown, Barrington Levy, Freddie McGregor, Dean Fraser, Linval Thompson, Augustus Pablo, The Heptones and many more. This led to a surge of albums mixed by Scientist from various sources throughout the 80's with "Scientist Meets The Space Invaders" being the most noteworthy.
