Pola, an all-star duo from Berne, consisting of Oli Kuster, keyboards (Mich Gerber, Züri West) and Marcel Blatti, drums and vocals (Mãozinha, Felka), had a go at the new and popular amalgamation of electro and songwriting. Subtle, unobtrusively arranged electronic sounds gently cradle melodies and voice, generously leaving space for solid, pop-allusive songwriting. Simple, dreamy songs of timeless, unaffected beauty like the album opener and single "Breathe" reflect the debut‘s general mood. But Pola can also tempestuously leap onto the dancefloor: replacing a whole band, the multiinstrumentalist duo with many souls perform an undeniably effective, energetic live set.
Some decent songwriting, atmospheric guitar lines and the colourful, unpretentious and tender timbre of Marcel Blatti’s voice, skilfully meandering through English and charming French, hold their varied repertoire firmly together. Pola, the short form of "polaroid", stands for picture-inspired, cinematic music creating inspirational, irresistably melodic tales.
At last year’s m4music festival they have been hailed as one of the "highlights"
The hook line of "Remote Control" perfectly sums up Pola‘s performance: "You lift me up into a new dimension / you’re my elevator".
