Born 1979 in the hometown of LSD - Basel, Switzerland. I started experimenting with tape-decks and turntables back in 1993 and was an active DJ selecting and mixing vinyl records from kasperlitheater to gangsta rap, electro funk and drum and bass stuff since the mid-nineties.
Together with 3 friends I formed Swiss Elektro Kollektiv dropdabomb.org back in 1997 and participated various events as a DJ in Switzerland. Later on I started doing live electronic gigs together with re?mo, those were supported by DJ Rewind on the wheels of steels and (at that time rather rare) lazer visuals by my man Rod the God. We released a first vinyl record (100 pieces) in 1998, which was a whitelabel 12" called the YAKUZA EP.
In 2001 I joined the online music community micromusic.net and got very inspired by the German band BODENSTÄNDIG 2000. Later on I focused on creating music entirely with the Atari ST internal soundchip (YM2149) and stayed in nerd mode for about half a decade. This was the beginning of my new solo project STU with over a 100 songs created only on the Atari sound-chip between 2001 and 2006, that were released mostly for free download.
In 2003 I joined the YM ROCKERZ demogroup ymrockerz.com, an international Atari ST chipmusic collective that again and again pushes the boundaries of the meanwile vintage Atari ST homecomputer to a completely different level.
In 2005, together with re?mo from DROP DA BOMB we released an EP entirely made on the Atari ST called 3CHNLS4BIT. After a last tour with DROP DA BOMB in Germany I started performing live solo with 2 Atari computers, with a first stage appearance at the Amsterdam Dance Event. For that I used a special DJ software named STj by Gareth Morris and my self-modified Atari ST called the YMixer, which has an analog filter (Steiner Parker VCF design) and mixing desk built inside, to provide a meaningful combination of digital and analogue sound synthesis for live situations.
In 2006 a norwegian teenage girl band ripped my music and as we later on discovered several tracks by other artists of the 8-bit scene as well. They used it as instrumentals and sung over it without doing any changes on the song. These were rather shocking news I received from Norway back then, but also funny in a certain way. My song STereoid became their biggest hit and was played on public radio as well as norwegian MTV. This finally led into the first, but not last plagiarism debate of the 8-bit community.
Between 2006 and 2010, I performed uncountable times on international dance-floors and released music on several 8-bit related record labels such as 8bitpeoples.com, Retinascan.de and Ubiktune.org. In 2007 I toured Russia together with dutch visual artist THE C-MEN and did a first oversea appearance at the BLIP FESTIVAL New York in 2008. As a peak of my live activities, I toured Japan with over 5 shows in Kobe, Osaka, Kyoto and Tokyo during late summer 2010. After that I backtracked from stage to focus on personal and artistic development…
Finally, we arrived in 2012 and I'm not having any intentions to stop keepin' in chip! New material is on the go, which you will be able to listen here as well and I'm eagerly planning to go back on stage in 2013, so you better stay tuned!
