Born in Switzerland, Sylvie Bourban grew up singing in different choirs. At age 16, she was already a soloist in the village choir and performing regularly in a piano bar. Meanwhile, she attended the conservatory where she studied classical piano and music theory. At age 18, she moves to Lausanne, where she studies vocal technique, at the Jazz school, EJMA, until she wins a scholarship from the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston.
While in Boston, Sylvie Bourban immerses herself in Jazz, Instrumental music for vocalist, Latin and Brazilian music and she studies composition. In 2008, she receives a Diploma with a Major in Professional Music, Summa Cum Laude, Berklee College of Music, Boston, MA.
In Boston, and with the help of the Fondation Irène Dénéréaz, she gathers her band in a recording studio. The players are among the best musicians around Berklee at the time. The alchemy of this band recorded live in a studio gave to [ki:r], her début album, a very special flavor.
Back in Switzerland, Sylvie Bourban works on the composition of her new album, which she recorded in Boston, with her beloved colleagues from Berklee. This second “sound snapshot”, which has been released in June 2010, shows a bigger pallet of her assets.
Sylvie likes challenges, incongruous languages and composition. Therefor, she produced in 2011 a CD in a Swiss dialect, for an association saving the Valaisan Dialect. She will release a new CD in French & Dialext for April 2012
Sylvie’s style is very much unique. She has been inspired by the knowledge of her teachers, John Medeski, Dominique Eade, Jamey Haddad, Hal Crook, Bob Stoloff, Fernando Brandao, Kenwood Dennard, Lisa Thorson and through workshops, with Bobby McFerrin, Rosa Passos and Bill Frisell among others. Her inspiration shines through many genres. She found a way to build her own sound and style, blending with a disconcerting ease all her different influences, with always the same unique ingredient, her sensitivity and love of interaction among musicians.

Magnifique de finesse, de force, de nuances, de couleurs... Nécessaire! La texture du son, l'expression et la maîtrise de la voix, tout ça réalise une alchimie sensuelle, chaude, riche avec une grande force d'évocation. Merci pour cette musique!
