ZonaSun’s music is inspired by roots reggae and by the current social situation and surroundings. Over the years the band has found its way into the genre, simply trying to avoid the typical cliché, developing a personal style, with special care for catchy melodies, conscious lyrics and rhythms. A bright and shiny sound but also mystical, dragging and expressive.
The project ZonaSun, based in Locarno on the Swiss shore of Lago Maggiore, was born in 2003. It started as a reggae / ragga duo with samplers and sequencers. In 2004 ZonaSun becomes a reggae band in all respects, led by Tom "Siddha" Mainardi, songwriter and frontman of the group. Lead vocal, backing vocals, keyboards, guitar, bass, drums, sax, flute and dub effects are the ingredients which, together with lyrics written in Italian and in English, help create the groovy and warm style that distinguishes ZonaSun.
In 2006, the band took part in the finals of the "European Reggae Contest" at the Rototom Sun Splash Festival in Osoppo, Italy and in 2008, the public and the professional jury of the contest “Palco ai Giovani” in Lugano, Switzerland rewarded ZonaSun with the first place award. In addition, the band also won the "Let Your Sound Shine" contest on the site www.reggae.ch, earning the privilege of playing on the same stage with artists such as Shaggy, Alborosie, Ce'Cile and Tiken Jah Fakoly at the Reeds Festival 2009 in Pfäffikon, Switzerland.
In May 2008, ZonaSun released its debut album, completely self-produced and titled "Subliminal Love". The album features 9 original tracks and a dub remix. On May 13, 2011, 3 years after this first record, ZonaSun released its second CD, called "Shiny Red". The 14 tracks on the disc fully represent ZonaSun’s artistic maturity and sound. Atmospheres, rhythms, harmonies and colors of the various songs, form the ideal ground for the lyrics, which deal with social issues, intimate and festive situations. Currently, some tracks of "Shiny Red", as well as "Subliminal Love", are being played on major Swiss radio stations.
Now it's time to set up some gigs for the next season. The video clip of the song “Shiny Red” is almost ready to be released and it will be published on the new official web site of the band (www.zonasun.net), which will be online soon.
With their experience to date and thanks to the release of "Shiny Red", ZonaSun has the momentum to earn a place in the Swiss reggae scene and to finally showcase the Italian-speaking region of Switzerland and to let its positive music and its “suny vibes” shine everywhere.
