True, raw, cheeky, charming, multi-faceted and tons of drive...the Delilahs have returned! With loud vs quiet, ironic vs funny together with cutting undertones, a huge second album ' Greetings from Gardentown' has emerged: a guitar fuelled hommage to the hometown of Zug. The male/female quartet of 2X2 merge together with powerful teamwork that takes sounds from the classic era of rock, and transports them into the present, without a hint of retro.
So, the question is, "How did they get here?" At this point in time, it's not important. However, for those of you who are rock historians or who are into nostalgia, Google awaits and will enlighten you to the trials and tribulations of a young female trio taking a step into the big bad world of music. But what counts for the newly formed yin and yang combination of Muriel Rhyner, Isabella Eder, Daniel Fischer and Philipp Rhyner is the here and now. The evolution from the media-styled cute girly group to an authentic rock band is complete. Hard graft together with a good 300 concerts under their belts has given a passion to the songs from 'Greetings from Gardentown,' a passion that sets the songs on fire and catapults them out into the awaiting audience.
It would have been easy for the girls to float on the truck load of excellent reviews that the debut album 'Delilahs' received, released in Switzerland and Germany in 2009/2010 respectively. However, being the true musicians they are, they chose not to rest on their laurels. Together with the energy from the new male band members, they took a rest from the media and used the calm space to write and produce this new collection of songs. Spring of this year 2011, saw the first blossoms. 'Heroes in Heels' was released in a blase of masked frivolity and a wink at the cartoon heroes that we all love and grew up with, the video resonates with our childhood and makes us want to know more about the band.
And so we get back to the element of family. The Rhyner brother and sister duo, Muriel and Philipp, were nurtured by parents from the true rock and roll era. Isabella and Muriel have been best friends for over 8 years and rather than going abroad to produce the feeling of oneness, the band chose to work with Roland Hausler, someone who has known the band from its infancy. Even the choice of record label was secured within the 'Delilah' family. Subversiv Records, the kult label of the drummer Daniel, has allowed the band the joy of artistic freedom paired with a total trust and understanding, which can be heard.
Back to the sound...is it Rock, Pop or Indie? Perhaps Power Pop, a whole new genre in itself? Listen, enjoy and then decide for yourself. Either way, 'Greetings from Gardentown' is something that should be listened to, and it is guaranteed that this hommage to hometown Zug will make you smile, encourage your toes to wiggle and make you wish you were part of the family too.
