After some long years of searching, the Swiss quintet finally found a good name for themselves on a restaurant menu. “We were on a trip to England” says Mathias Schenk, singer and guitarist of the music-ensemble.” Somewhere along the line, we found ourselves sitting in a restaurant that offered “Death by Chocolate” as a dessert. I tried it. It was a murderous chocolate cake that felt like a punch in the guts.” Take a sweet temptation and add a little danger to it. The guys from Biel liked the idea and decided to make Death by Chocolate their name.
Four of them have been making music since 2003. They acquired their skills, supported by the classic Rock’n’Roll of the 50s. “We didn’t neither know how to play our instruments, nor how to sing. We began with classics from Elvis and Chuck Berry. Even today we’re still playing Little Richards’s “Good Golly Miss Molly”, says Mathias. “As far as I’m concerned, I’ve always liked Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple, too. We later learned about the Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, which we all liked.” Influenced by Bands like these, Death by Chocolate extracted their own sound which can be characterized as ageless Rock’n’Roll.
“We’ve always plaid our own songs in addition to the cover-songs. Over the years we have been adding more and more of our own style to our songs.” says Schenk. The guys from Biel were not interested in making any records until drummer Julien Pinheiro joined the band. The EP “My portable Love” appeared as a result, now followed by their first album “From Birthdays To Funerals”. Eleven songs, solid, cunning and so full of energy that it enthralls the audience.
The ideas, mostly delivered by Mathias Schenk are developed by the whole band at the rehearsal room into complete songs. The texts are also written by the frontman. In “Our fathers Ghosts” he sings about the relationships of fathers and sons, dedicating himself especially on the ability to take criticism between the generations. “Curtain Call” is about the relationship of a loner to the mass and “Demopolis” relates to hope, disappointment and homesickness.
Death By Chocolate has already participated in 200 gigs. The range goes from little clubs like the “White Trash” in Berlin to the “EXIT Festival” in Serbia and even to a Bon Jovi concert in Zurich’s “Letzigrund stadium”, where the band supported Jon Bon Jovi in front of 40.000 spectators. In summer 2012 Death by Chocolate not only played six of the biggest festivals in Switzerland, but also at the “Sazava Fest” in Czech Republic and “EXIT Festival” in Serbia. They shared the stage with international Acts such as The Foo Fighters, Lenny Kravitz, The Hives, Eagles of Death Metal, The Offspring, Mark Lanegan, Kaiser Chiefs, Wolfmother, Little Dragon and many more. With their album’s debut “From Birhtdays to Funerals” Death by Chocolate was presented in over 150 radio stations and over 60 online and print medias all over Europe, mainly in Germany and Switzerland but also in the UK and other countries. Considering the high quality of their album's debut, Death By Chocolate can't wait to go to the streets and to light the fuse of their explosive hymns live. “We have worked hard to create something good” says Mathias confidently, “now we want to rock the stages in as much countries as possible.”
