Geneva-based production duo SUMO was founded in 1999 by the Sumi brothers: Fred, (bass producer) and Alex (vocals, guitar) musical soundscape combines electronic elements and live instruments, soulful vocals over funk addicted grooves, a mix of “classic” dance-music influences with different styles of beats and sounds, from hip-hop to house. The duo performs live along with a funk combo (horns, drums, percussions), touring in Europe (Paris-Batofar, London-Cargo, New- York-Cielo) and for supporting acts such as Morcheeba, Faithless, Jamie Lidell and Gotan Project. From 2000 to 2004 they released on their own label Chiz four 12” EP’s and their first album Before The Sun. Reviewed by the press and supported by a wide-range of top international level DJs (Deep Dish,Pete Tong, Gilles Peterson, Laurent Garnier, Roger Sanchez), various tracks were playlisted on radios and selected for worldwide compilations (Fashion TV, In House We Trust 4, The House of Yo).
Rise (2006), the second album was released on the Swiss electronic label Mental Groove including the successful «Do Me Like» remix by Chab and Prince cover “Sign of the Times”.
The last (2010) and third SUMO album Over the Beat features special guests (Detroit Grand Pubahs, Aloan). Produced on Chiz, the album is a family groovy affair filled with catchy soulful vocals and a touch of 80’s funk electronic sounds mixed with hip-hop and deep-house beats. Like on the bridge, suspended “over the beat”...a place to dance.
SUMO is about to finish the recording of his fourth album “Ex-machina”, which will be release in April 2013. For this opus, Alex and Fred have chosen a totally different creative process as before. They have declined nine songs of the repertory of SUMO in a acoustic way. The whole band (guitar, bass, drums, sax, trumpet and percussions) has arranged and developed the songs in different directions inspired by their musical influences: jazz, blues, rock, soul, reggae, latin, funk. The idea of this new album is to use only real instruments, no more samples and electronic sounds, as the title of the album “Ex-machina” tells us.
