Composer and multi-instrumentalist Toby May, cut his teeth in the music business as a drummer and percussionist. In his late teens May moved to Boston, USA and for 4 years collaborated with a variety of artists touring, songwriting and recording across Americas East Coast. Since then, throughout a 20-year career, he has continued writing and has himself recorded 2 successful albums with the band Catcha, of which he is a founder member. In addition to his work as a performing artist Toby has also run his own sound design company specializing in producing soundtracks and music for the advertising industry.
Toby’s enthusiasm & passion for music has seen him working all corners of the globe in many different musical, managerial and logistical roles and as such, travelling has always been a big part of Toby’s life and a constant source of inspiration for his songs.
In 2010, Toby decided to take a break from Catcha and focus on his own solo project, taking time to search deep down for what it was he really wanted to say musically. After much soul searching and many lonely days and nights spent writing in the studio, Toby May is back with a new set of songs and an amazing live band waiting to deliver his unique brand of powerful music to the public..
Are you ready for Toby May?
An audio slideshow of life featuring observations on relationships, situations, feelings and experiences in different cultures. Toby spent time writing down his ideas and putting them to music, the resulting songs are accessible, catchy and put together like a LEGO set, all the pieces have to fit properly in order for them to work, thus allowing the listener to experience each emotion as Toby intended at the time of writing.
After demoing his new sounds Toby and his trusty vintage Telecaster went in search of the perfect band to do the new songs justice: -
Drums: Swiss based UK Drummer Richard ‚Spoons’ Spooner was the first to go „Hell yeah, let's do this!“ having spent years touring the world and recording with a wide variety of artists, his rock solid approach just made sense. With the addition of his trademark vintage Ludwig drums and Paiste cymbals, the foundation for Toby's songs are in very good hands indeed...
Bass: UK based musician Steve Amadeo was so open to new ideas after hearing the demos he bent over backwards to get bass lines for Toby to try out and regularly contributed via SKYPE from Liverpool. He pulled out all his noisy pedals, changed the string gauge he used and mastered playing with a pick. After years working as a successful freelance Bassist around Europe, Steve's bass playing is rock solid and has attitude, just what the songs need, Liverpool is never that far away...
Rhythm Guitar: Swiss Recording Engineer, Audiophile and Guitarist Emmanuel Hungrecker initially helped out engineering the demo sessions in Geneva and ended up playing parts and getting involved with the project personally, he pulled out his beautiful vintage microphones, homemade preamps and customized guitar and got strumming and picking, perfectly complementing the lead parts created by Toby..
