Yael Miller studied voice, piano and trombone at
the « Yigal Alon » Conservatory in Israel in both
the classical and the jazz departments. She was
the first jazz singer to enter the prestigious
programme « Outstanding Musician » of the
Israeli army. Participants for this program are
chosen by sitting for entrance examination and
the program makes it possible for professional
musicians to continue practicing their instruments
by reducing their military obligations. Since age
fifteen, Yael has been composing and producing
her own musical projects. Her first concert abroad
was in China, with the vocal jazz group « Contra-Bat ». Urged by a travel bug, at 20 years, she
decides to listen to her nomadic instinct and leaves Israel. Dreams became realities, meetings
led to projects, her steps successfully carried her to New York, France and finally to Geneva,
where she settled in 2006.
Since her arrival in this city, she sang with various musicians of the jazz scene; such as the
Norwegian pianist Maren Selvaag, which lead her to play in Lillehammer and others like Michel
Bastet, Jean-Jacques Pedretti and Evariste Pérez. Simultaneously, she confronted herself to the
theatre world with the play « Where do things go when we forget them? » (« Elles vont où les
choses quand on les oublie? ») by Labiscou company. She also developed her talents of free
improvisation with Jacques Siron. In August 2008, Yael went to Varanasi in order to study Kial,
North Indian classical singing, with Mangala Tiwari. Since then, Yael continues to work on this
music, which requires a complex technique.
